IGNITED BY THE CALGARY FLAMES FOUNDATION
Hockey Education Reaching Out Society (HEROS) is a volunteer- driven organization committed to empowering children through ice hockey. The premise of HEROS is to use the game of hockey as a catalyst to attract youth to a program offering support for education, self-esteem building and life-skills training.
The Flames Foundation supports HEROS through a multi-year partnership that resulted in a new HEROS program in the Calgary neighbourhood of Bowness. The partnership brings free hockey programming that teaches life skills to over 35 children annually. The three-year partnership fully funds the program in Bowness.
“I started with HEROS 18 years ago. When I was 12 years old a gang recruited me to join and mule drugs. My teacher found this program and enrolled me. I used the excuse that I had to play hockey with HEROS when gang members approached me after school and to my surprise, they let me go. HEROS has always been there for me. Thanks to HEROS, I’m achieving my dream.“ -NICK (started HEROS at age 12)
